Come illustratore, designer e come capo di una scuola di incisione, Hendrick Goltzius aveva una notevole influenza che ha precipitato un cambiamento di stile nell'arte olandese intorno al 1600. Goltzius lavorò a Haarlem dal 1575 e intorno al 1590-1 studiò l'arte rinascimentale e antica romana in Italia. Insieme all'artista fiammingo Bartholomäus Spranger e alla sua figura manierista ideale, Goltzius ha introdotto il suo stile elegante nell'arte olandese. Oltre a Jacob Matham, promosse, tra gli altri, Jan Saenredam, che riprodusse questi disegni altamente finiti delle tre dee dal suo insegnante in una squisita suite di incisioni in rame, che li danno invertito.
