Der nordniederländische Maler Hendrik van Limborch (1681-1759) gehörte zu den besten Schülern des holländischen Feinmalers Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722). Letzterer war für seine Porträts und vor allem für seine kleinformatigen, in der Wiedergabe fast porzellanartigen Historiendarstellungen bekannt. Bereits Zeitgenossen bewunderten van Limborch für seine Fähigkeit, den Stil van der Werffs nachzuahmen, so auch in der 1749/50 entstandenen
