Per la Tavola è un ritratto di gruppo tanto quanto una testimonianza della storia letteraria del XIX secolo, e il gruppo di poesia Parnassus in particolare. Un gruppo di uomini sono riuniti intorno alla fine di un tavolo dopo un pasto. Tre sono in piedi, da sinistra a destra: Elzéar Bonnier, Emile Blémont e Jean Aicard. Cinque sono seduti: Paul Verlaine e Arthur Rimbaud, Léon Valade, Ernest d'Hervilly e Camille Pelletan. Sono tutti vestiti di nero tranne uno, Camille Pelletan, che non è un poeta come gli altri, ma un politico. Il posto centrale è occupato da Emile Blémont, che acquistò il dipinto e lo diede al Louvre nel 1910.Mancano almeno due cifre: Charles Baudelaire, a cui il dipinto inizialmente doveva essere un tributo, che morì nel 1867 e Albert Mérat che non voleva essere dipinto in compagnia dei poeti diabolici Verlaine e Rimbaud e fu reputato sostituito da un gruppo di fiori.
