In dieser frühen Malerei, die für seine leicht exzentrische, ausbalancierte Komposition interessant ist, musste Fantin noch den außergewöhnlichen Realismus erzielen, der mit seinen Stillleben der Mitte bis Ende der 1860er Jahre verbunden ist. Allerdings war sein Auge auf subtile Farbharmonien bereits gut entwickelt, wie in der Juxtaposition der rosaweißen Malmaisonrosen, lilafarbenen Trauben und goldenen Birne zu erkennen ist.
