In questo primo dipinto, che è interessante per la sua composizione leggermente eccentrica, off-balance, Fantin doveva ancora raggiungere lo straordinario realismo associato alle sue nature morte di metà-fine del 1860. Tuttavia, il suo occhio per sottili armonie di colore era già ben sviluppato, come evidente nella giustapposizione delle rose di malmaison rosa-bianche, uva viola-tinged, e pera d'oro.
