En noviembre de 1901, Fantin-Latour escribió: "Nunca más flores o retratos. Me uso a mí mismo pintando lo que venga a la mente y, felizmente, tengo un distribuidor que compra lo que hago." El cuadro actual es un ejemplo de las obras imaginativas que el artista, liberado de la necesidad de pintar retratos o de vida comercial, hizo al final de su carrera.
