Henri Rousseau ha commemorato il primo anniversario della proclamazione della prima Repubblica francese nel 1792. I contadini danzano il farandole, una popolare danza francese del sud, circa tre alberi di libertà e due figure femminili che rappresentano la Prima e la Terza Repubblica. Rousseau ha copiato i ballerini da un'illustrazione rivista francese, ma ha aggiunto striscioni, i poli di libertà e le figure allegoriche. Un carro sullo sfondo è pieno di musicisti in costume, ricordando sfilate che l'artista aveva visto. Ha usato colori brillanti e forme solide per esprimere la felicità della scena che simboleggia il buon governo. A destra, la posizione eretta dei leader repubblicani dignitosi segnala la solidità della Repubblica francese.
