Dopo aver viaggiato a Roma nel 1634, il pittore francese Mau educato tornò a Parigi cinque anni dopo e divenne un importante esponente della pittura paesaggistica classica. Durante gli anni 1640 e 1650 i suoi patroni erano tra i più potenti in Francia, tra cui il cardinale Richelieu e la regina Anna d'Austria. In confronto ad altre opere di Mau indumenti, questo dipinto è particolarmente austero nella sua giustapposizione scenica dell'architettura classica e nel paesaggio illuminato. Il carattere esatto del soggetto non è stato identificato, anche se l'eco tra la coppia amorosa e la coppia di cani sembra appuntitamente licenziata. Questo dipinto è stato sequestrato dai nazisti della famiglia Lanckoronski a Vienna nel 1939 e ricostituito nel 1945.
