Farrer immigre à New York depuis son Angleterre natale dans les années 1860 et commence à admirer New York City et ses paysages marins. Il fut l'un des plus ardents défenseurs de la gravure en tant qu'outil créatif pour les artistes.Il fut l'un des fondateurs du New York Etching Club en 1873. Ce travail, publié à l'origine dans American Art Review (1879), est un excellent exemple de ses sujets marins combinant les effets atmosphériques et lumineux dans une seule plaque. L'obscurité, richement incrustée sous les bateaux au premier plan contraste fortement avec les lignes délicatement incisées et activées de l'eau et du ciel.
