Hecate, la dea greca che ha presieduto stregoneria e riti magici, era storicamente conosciuta come la “Night-Hag”, da cui il titolo che l’artista ha dato a questa opera. Illustra un passaggio dal Paradiso Perso dal poeta inglese John Milton, in cui gli Hellhounds sono paragonati a quelli che “seguire la notte-hag quando, chiamato, / In segreto, cavalcando attraverso l'aria che viene, attirato con l'odore del sangue infantile, a ballare / Con le streghe Lapponia, mentre la luna laboriosa Eclissi al loro fascino.” Fuseli e Goya non si conoscevano, ma entrambi catturarono l'impatto psicologico del tumulto e della guerra vissuta da molti durante l'età della rivoluzione e dell'espansione napoleonica.
