Inman dipinse i ritratti dei nativi americani in preparazione alla produzione di litografie colorate a mano per la "Storia delle tribù indiane del Nord America" di Thomas L. McKenney (1836–44). Questi leader erano stati originariamente dipinti dalla vita da Charles Bird King, quando invitati a Washington dal governo degli Stati Uniti e accolti dal presidente James Monroe nel 1822. I ritratti del re furono distrutti in un incendio alla Smithsonian Institution nel 1865, mentre la serie di Inman fu mostrata nelle principali città da New York a Londra.
