Tanner è stato tra i pochi artisti afroamericani a godere del successo internazionale e acclamato durante la fine del XIX e l'inizio del XX secolo. Nato a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, ha studiato con l'artista americano Thomas Eakins. Tanner si trasferì in Francia a causa di pregiudizi razziali negli Stati Uniti e riuscì nella sua carriera lì. Questa vita mostra l'influenza dell'impressionismo francese e dell'artista postimpressionista Paul Cézanne.
