Henry Peach Robinson divenne interessato alla fotografia dopo aver visitato la Grande Mostra del 1851. Formato nelle belle arti, espone un dipinto ad olio alla mostra annuale della Royal Academy nel 1852. Proseguì la pittura mentre sperimentava i processi di daguerreotipo e calotipo nei primi anni 1850. Dopo una visita dal Dr. Hugh Diamond nel 1854, Robinson decise di adottare la fotografia come professione. Aprì uno studio nel 1857 e fu eletto alla Photographic Society di Londra. L'anno successivo ha creato la sua complessa combinazione di stampa
