Henry Peach Robinson se interesó en la fotografía después de visitar la Gran Exposición de 1851. Formado en las bellas artes, exhibió una pintura al óleo en la exposición anual de la Real Academia en 1852. Continuó la pintura mientras experimentaba con los procesos de daguerreotipo y calotipo a principios de los años 1850. Después de una visita del Dr. Hugh Diamond en 1854, Robinson decidió adoptar la fotografía como su profesión. Abrió un estudio en 1857 y fue elegido para la Sociedad Fotográfica de Londres.
