Mary Edmonia Lewis era la prima donna nordamericana di colore a guadagnare fama come scultore. Lewis era la figlia di una donna Ojibwe e di un uomo afroamericano nato libero nel New Jersey. Lewis ha frequentato l'Oberlin College. Nel 1863 si trasferì a Boston dove divenne scultore neoclassico. Il suo busto di Abraham Lincoln divenne famoso. Il pezzo più ambizioso di Lewis fu la “morte di Cleopatra”, una risposta alle opere monumentali di scultori maschili bianchi. Lewis si trasferì a Roma nel 1865. Il suo studio è stato aperto al pubblico per dimostrare che ha lavorato il marmo stesso. Un cattolico devoto, Lewis ha usato soggetti religiosi e abolizionisti.
