La calligrafia Ōbaku Zen è caratterizzata da caratteri forti e audacemente spazzolati in una o a volte due colonne. Queste pergamene, scritte da Mokuan Shōtō e Sokuhi Nyoitsu (cinese: Jifei Ruji), mostrano la direttività e l'assicurazione bravura che caratterizza le migliori opere calligrafiche Ōbaku. Entrambi i monaci erano discepoli di Ingen (che portarono Ōbaku in Giappone) ed emigrarono dalla Cina per aiutarlo a mantenere le tradizioni e i regolamenti monastici cinesi unici della setta.
