Hishida Shunsô era de la ciudad de Iida en la prefectura de Nagano. Junto con individuos como Okakura Tenshin y Yokoyama Taikan, participó en el establecimiento de Nihon Bijutsu-in (Japón Art Institute). Intentó un estilo de pintura sin líneas, llamado “Môrô-tai” (estilo vago), y junto con Taikan, promovió el movimiento para reformar la pintura al estilo japonés al final del período Meiji. Esta composición es un trabajo importante situado en el primer período de Môrô-tai. Se plantea la expresión del aire y la luz a través de técnicas de gradación y expresa hábilmente el encanto sutilmente hermoso y silencioso de un valle en medio del otoño.
