L'iscrizione latina ci dice l'identità di questo nobile: Robert Cheseman, 48 anni nel 1533. Cheseman era il capo falconiere del re inglese Enrico VIII, una posizione onorevole. Sta accarezzando l'uccello in mano con un gesto tenero. Il pittore tedesco Hans Holbein dipinse questo capolavoro poco dopo che si era stabilito per il bene in Inghilterra. La sua sorprendente tecnica pittorica è dimostrata a grande vantaggio nello sguardo intento dell’uomo, nel raso lucido delle maniche e nella campana di ottone.
