L'inscription latine nous raconte l'identité de ce noble : Robert Cheseman, 48 ans en 1533. Cheseman était le principal fauconnier du roi anglais Henry VIII, un poste honorable. Il frappe l'oiseau sur sa main avec un geste tendre. Le peintre allemand Hans Holbein a peint ce chef-d'œuvre peu après qu'il s'était installé pour de bon en Angleterre. Sa technique de peinture étonnante est montrée à un grand avantage dans le regard d'intention de l'homme, dans le satin brillant de ses manches et dans la petite cloche en laiton.
