La poesia, inclusa nell'antologia New Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems (Shin kokin wakashū), è del monaco-poet Kamo no Chōmei (1153-1216), famoso per le sue poesie sui fiori di ciliegio. Kōetsu e Tawaraya Sōtatsu hanno prodotto molte opere simili sia su singoli fogli che su nastri. Raramente i motivi di sfondo hanno qualsiasi connessione semantica o simbolica alle poesie che accompagnano.
