Daumier a été publié pour la première fois dans un hebdomadaire satirique appelé La Silhouette, où il a reçu son premier goût de la censure et de la politique républicaine. Daumier mène ses batailles politiques avec son crayon lithographique. Les situations modernes et les inconvénients d'une société industrialisée étaient de grands fourrages pour Daumier.
