Poeta, calligrafo e Chan (Zen) adept buddista, Huang Tingjian credeva che la calligrafia dovrebbe essere spontanea e auto-espressiva, "una foto della mente." Contenente quasi dodicicento caratteri, questo handcroll è un capolavoro di scrittura cursive-script. Trascrive un resoconto di una rivalità tra due funzionari: Lian Po, un generale distinto; e Lin Xiangru, uno stratega esperto. La trascrizione di Huang termina bruscamente con le parole di Lin: “Quando due tigri combattono, uno deve perire. Mi comporto come faccio perché ho messo il destino del nostro paese prima delle faide private.” Leggi nel contesto di Song infighting politico, la trascrizione di Huang diventa un potente indictment della partisanship che portò al suo bando nel 1094.
