Sulla base di una scommessa con la regina Maria Antonietta, fratello più giovane del re Luigi XV, il comte d’Artois, ha avuto un padiglione di piacere costruito alla periferia di Parigi in un solo sessantaquattro giorni attraverso il lavoro di più di ottocento artigiani. I sei dipinti di Robert dei paesaggi italiani sono stati installati in un'elaborata sala da bagno, che ha spinto il tema dell'acqua. Dopo aver trascorso undici anni in Italia, dove ha fatto amicizia con Jean Honoré Fragonard e altri artisti francesi all'estero, Robert conosceva l'architettura antica e la scultura profondamente. In questa serie, invece dell'esattitudine antiquariata, combinava liberamente fonti.
