Il realismo accresciuto di questo ritratto, in particolare la barbetta, è un segno distintivo del lavoro di Hugo van der Goes. Impostando la testa dell'uomo contro un interno scuro, accanto a una finestra luminosa, il contrasto accentuato di luce e ombra migliora la modellazione delle caratteristiche facciali. Il ritratto fu poi tagliato in una forma ovale da un pannello rettangolare, che probabilmente originariamente formava parte di un trittico devozionale. Il sitter, con le mani unite nella preghiera, dirige lo sguardo verso l'immagine religiosa mancante.
