Luigi XV succedette al trono di Francia nel 1715 alla morte del suo bisnonno, Luigi XIV, che aveva regnato per più di settanta anni. Il bambino di cinque anni era l'unico figlio sopravvissuto di Louis, duc de Bourgogne, e Marie Adélaïde de Savoie, entrambi morti di vaiolo nel 1712. La tela è una delle molte versioni del primo ritratto ufficiale di Rigaud di Luigi XV, che è stato commissionato dal reggente, il duc d’Orléans, per il palazzo di Versailles.
