Louis XV gelang dem Thron Frankreichs 1715 nach dem Tod seines Urgroßvaters Louis XIV, der seit mehr als siebzig Jahren regiert hatte. Der fünfjährige Junge war der einzige überlebende Sohn von Louis, duc de Bourgogne, und Marie Adélaïde de Savoie, die beide 1712 an Smallpox gestorben waren. Die Leinwand ist eine von vielen Versionen von Rigauds erstem offiziellem Porträt von Louis XV, das von der Regent, dem Duc d’Orléans, für den Palast von Versailles in Auftrag gegeben wurde.
