Luis XV tuvo éxito en el trono de Francia en 1715 con la muerte de su bisabuelo, Luis XIV, quien había reinado durante más de setenta años. El niño de cinco años era el único hijo sobreviviente de Louis, duc de Bourgogne, y Marie Adélaïde de Savoie, ambos muertos de viruela en 1712. El lienzo es una de las muchas versiones del primer retrato oficial de Rigaud de Luis XV, encargado por el regente, el duc d’Orléans, para el palacio de Versalles.
