In questo drammatico primo piano di un unico elemento paesaggistico, Ikeda Koson rende un momento senza tempo in un grove di cipressi hinoki. Egli raffigura un'atmosfera di spazio errato e spostando la luce da abilmente variando toni di inchiostro da nero a grigio nelle foglie di ramificazioni simili a frond. Texture e forma derivano dall'applicazione di inchiostro bagnato sopra lavaggi pallidi sui tronchi albero. Koson, allievo del revivalista Rinpa Sakai Hōitsu (1761–1828), ha portato una nuova vitalità a temi standard nel repertorio Rinpa attraverso la sua pennellata virtuosa e la capacità di trasmettere forme naturalistiche senza sacrificare l'audace impatto decorativo dei suoi predecessori.
