Thomas Gainsborough aveva una passione per il paesaggio inglese, dedicando molte ore a studiare gli effetti del cambiamento della luce e dell'ombra sui boschi e i campi della sua zona, prima intorno a Ipswich, dove si trasferì da Londra nel 1752, e poi a Bath, dove lavorò dal 1759 al 1773. Fu influenzato dall'artista paesaggista olandese Jacob van Ruisdael, ma adattato le sue tecniche alle ambientazioni inglesi. Secondo Sir Joshua Reyonds, primo direttore della Royal Academy nel 1768, quando la mancanza di luce o intemperato tempo precludeva di lavorare fuori dalle porte, Gainsborough avrebbe portato rami di alberi e altra vegetazione nel suo studio in modo che potesse studiarli a tempo libero. Ha anche creato miniatura
