Thomas Gainsborough tuvo una pasión por el paisaje inglés, dedicando muchas horas a estudiar los efectos de cambiar la luz y la sombra en los bosques y campos de su entorno local, primero alrededor de Ipswich, donde se trasladó de Londres en 1752, y luego en Bath, donde trabajó de 1759 a 1773. Fue influenciado por el paisajista holandés Jacob van Ruisdael, pero adaptó sus técnicas a la configuración inglesa. Según Sir Joshua Reyonds, primer director de la Real Academia en 1768, cuando falleciendo la luz o el clima intemperado excluía trabajar fuera de las puertas, Gainsborough llevaría ramas de árboles y otra vegetación a su estudio para que pudiera estudiarlos a tiempo libre.
