Un grande pittore di soggetti militari, Pils eseguì questo disegno compositivo in connessione con un dipinto, di circa cinquanta piedi di lunghezza, commemorando una visita del 1860 da Napoleone III all'Algeria, che era stata conquistata dalla Francia nel 1830. La grande tela fu commissionata a Versailles ma il suo destino è sconosciuto; potrebbe essere stata distrutta nel 1871, durante l'insurrezione conosciuta come Comune di Parigi.
