Hanshan e Shide (attivo tardo VIII-inizio del IX secolo) erano monaci buddisti Chan che tenevano posizioni di basso livello a Guoqingsi, un tempio sul sacro monte Tiantai della Cina. Allontanati dallo spettatore qui, Hanshan (“Cold Mountain”) era un monaco-poet reclusive. Shide, il suo compagno costante, porta una scopa che indica il suo ruolo di custode del tempio. La coppia di figure è venuta a rappresentare un aspetto iconoclastico di Chan (giapponese: Zen) pratica monastica ed è stato un tema popolare nella pittura giapponese. Nella tradizione buddista, Hanshan e Shide sono stati anche onorati come emanazioni dei bodhisattvas Monju e Fugen (Sanscrito: Manjushri e Samantabhadra), che rappresentano le virtù della saggezza e della compassione. L'iscrizione si riferisce a questa associazione: “Uno è il Bodhisattva del Grande Sentiero. L'altro il Patriarca del Grande Buddha. Quali prove ci sono? Una scopa rotta, una scrittura tattered, e un versetto non timoso” (traduzione di Aaron Rio).
