Mentre viveva per una parte del tempo a Isleworth, Turner ha fatto molte escursioni lungo il fiume, disegno, pittura e pesca - il suo hobby preferito. Tenne una barca, e spesso si fermò durante la notte in vari luoghi di atterraggio. Dipinse anche a bordo, come qui su piccoli pannelli di legno e a volte, più ambiziosa, su tela. La pittura in oli nell'aria aperta, diretta dal soggetto, stava diventando popolare all'inizio del XIX secolo, in risposta ad una crescente sensazione di naturalismo. Turner
