Uno dei luoghi più importanti di Roma è il Forum, un'area di templi e monumenti rovinati che rappresenta il cuore della città antica. Nel corso dei secoli, il Forum era stato permesso di decadere. Entro il XIX secolo, tuttavia, gli scavi erano iniziati in modo serio sul sito e i frammenti spezzati dell'architettura romana stavano lentamente riemergendo nella luce. Questo dipinto, progettato per l'architetto Sir John Soane, cattura la vista verso il Campidoglio. A sinistra si trova l'Arco di Tito, e a destra, le volte giganti della Basilica di Costantino.
