Spoleto est une ville pittoresque en Ombrie, célèbre pour son Ponte delle Torri (Bridge of Towers), un exploit médiéval d'ingénierie qui s'étend sur la gorge profonde à l'est. Turner passa à Rome en 1819. Comme dans tant de ses huiles d'inspiration italienne, il a amélioré la topographie réelle avec un sens évocateur mais imaginaire de l'atmosphère.
