Spoleto es una pintoresca ciudad de Umbria, famosa por su Ponte delle Torri (Bridge of Towers), una hazaña medieval de ingeniería que abarca la garganta profunda al este. Turner pasó por la ciudad en su camino a Roma en 1819. Como en tantos de sus aceites de inspiración italiana, ha mejorado la topografía real con un sentido evocador pero imaginado de la atmósfera.
