Linlithgow Palace sorge sulla riva sud di Linlithgow Loch, a ovest di Edimburgo. Era stata sia una residenza reale scozzese che una roccaforte militare, ma fu distrutta dal fuoco nel 1746. Turner visitò il sito durante il suo viaggio in Scozia del 1801, facendo schizzi sul posto che in seguito utilizzò per questo dipinto. Ha sacrificato la precisione topografica per una composizione ordinata incorniciata da alberi e con donne che si affacciano in primo piano. Questi dispositivi sono caratteristici della tradizione della pittura paesaggistica classica che ha cercato di emulare in questo dipinto.
