De Gheyn, peintre de La Haye, a peut-être été le premier maître hollandais à peindre une vie morte de fleurs, peu après 1600. Il a fait ce tableau plus de dix ans plus tard. Il montre un bouquet abondant de nombreuses fleurs différentes. De Gheyn n'a pas copié un bouquet existant, car les fleurs représentées ici fleurissent à différents moments de l'année. Il se souciait plutôt de peindre un «portrait» des plus belles fleurs. C'est pourquoi il les a tous placés à l'avant du bouquet, où ils étaient également visibles.
