De Gheyn, pintor de La Haya, pudo haber sido el primer maestro holandés en pintar una vida tranquila de sólo flores, poco después de 1600. Hizo esta pintura más de diez años después. Muestra un ramo profuso de muchas flores diferentes. De Gheyn no ha copiado un ramo existente, ya que las flores que se muestran aquí florecen en diferentes momentos del año. Estaba preocupado por pintar un ‘portrait’ de las flores más bellas. Por eso los puso a todos en la parte delantera del ramo, donde eran igualmente visibles.
