Questo dipinto a soffitto proviene da una casa a Leiden (Rapenburg 48) ed è appeso qui dal 1912. Apollo, il dio classico delle arti, è raffigurato sul centrotavola ovale. È circondato dalle sue nove muse, che si distinguono per le varie discipline artistiche. Le quattro grisaille intorno al centrotavola rappresentano l'elegia, la commedia, la canzone pastorale e l'epos. Nel Settecento, l'artista di Amsterdam Jacob de Wit fu il principale esperto in questo tipo di tour de force illusionista.
