Gustavo Adolfo è mostrato mezza lunghezza, faccia a destra. Il re è a testa nudo con una fronte alta, una barba appuntita sulla guancia. È vestito in un'armatura con un grosso collare bianco a ghiacciato che cade sopra le spalle e attraverso il suo seno porta una banda di campo blu - il segno di paludi di campo - cucito con lacci d'oro. Il pannello ha un giunto verticalmente al centro coperto da un ritocco. Non è firmato. Il pittore fiammingo Jacob Hoefnagel è conosciuto per lo più come un pittore in miniatura ritratto esperto e anche come incisore di rame. Prima di arrivare in Svezia nei primi anni 1620 era stato impiegato dall'imperatore Rudolph II a Praga. Il suo stile è molto preciso, anche se questo ritratto non è un dipinto in miniatura di Gustav Adolfo ha ancora tutte le sue qualità, una matita dettagliata e distinta dà una caratterizzazione molto dio del modello.
