In questo dipinto, Van Ruisdael catturato l'essenza del paesaggio olandese. Da un'alta dune, guardiamo fuori la terra piana in direzione di Haarlem, la città in lontananza. Sopra la città si estende un cielo immenso con nuvole che passano. Van Ruisdael dipinge il sole che splende tra le nuvole, alternando luce e ombra. Dirige lo sguardo nel dipinto lungo le toppe del sole, dai campi in cui il lino si diffonde fino alla candeggina alla Chiesa di San Bavo in lontananza.
