Questa straordinaria pala d'altare, profondamente espressiva e quasi unica nel mostrare il battesimo di Cristo come noc-turne, è l'ultima opera conosciuta da Bassano. Il grande pittore veneziano lo lasciò incompiuto alla sua morte nel 1592, e i suoi eredi lo mantenne per più di un secolo. Ad alcuni occhi, lo stile incompiuto del dipinto (non finito) sembra un passo cruciale verso il modernismo, da paragonare, ad esempio, ai “pitture nere” di Goya. Bassano interpreta il battesimo di Cristo non come un evento soleggiato in un paesaggio pastorale, ma come la tragica apertura della sua Passione.
