Im Jahre 1590 erstellte Ligozzi eine Reihe von aufwendigen, allegorischen Zeichnungen der sieben toten Sünden (sechs gibt es noch). Dieses Gemälde, ein Fragment, zeigt die zentralen Figuren der Allegorie von Avarice, für die Zeichnung in der National Gallery, Washington. Wie in Emblembüchern beschrieben, wird Avarice als eine blasse Frau gezeigt, die eine Tasche Geld hält. Das drohende Skelett deutet darauf hin, dass der Künstler auch von anderen Repräsentationen des Lasters in der Literatur (perhaps Dante) oder der bildenden Kunst inspiriert wurde.
