Quando Tissot si trasferì a Londra nel 1871, si immerse nella scena locale, con il lavoro per Vanity Fair e dipinti di genere con il fiume Thames come sfondo. Questa tela è una ripetizione della porzione di sinistra di una delle sue foto più famose di Londra, Bad News (National Museum of Wales, Cardiff), che mostra un capitano e la sua ragazza che assorbe le notizie della sua imminente partenza mentre un compagno prepara il tè, con la piscina di Londra sullo sfondo. Qui, la vista è del fitto paesaggio urbano oltre quel tratto del fiume. L'amico di Tissot Degas possedeva uno studio di matita per questo lavoro.
