Während Papst Pius VII blieb in Paris nach der Weihe, David bemalte auch sein Porträt und schloss sich damit einer illustren Band vergangener Künstler - Raphael, Titian und Velázquez - als Maler eines Pontifex. David brach mit Protokoll, indem er saß, während er arbeitete, wie zuvor die Tradition diktierte, dass der demütige Künstler kniete, um den Papst zu malen. David aber würdigte die Ehre, die ihm geschenkt wurde und offenbar feine Kleider anziehen und ein Schwert trug, wie er arbeitete. Er reagierte herzlich auf den ehrwürdigen alten Pontifex und war sowohl begeistert und bewegt von der Wohltat, die er von der Hand von Pius erhielt.
