Mentre Papa Pio VII rimase a Parigi dopo la consacrazione, David dipinse anche il suo ritratto e si unì così ad un'illustre banda di artisti passati - Raffaello, Tiziano e Velázquez - come il pittore di un pontefice. David si ruppe con il protocollo seduto mentre lavorava, come la tradizione aveva dettato che l'umile artista si inginocchiasse a dipingere il Papa. David, però, apprezzò l'onore concessogli e a quanto pare indossava vestiti fini e indossava una spada mentre lavorava. Rispose calorosamente al venerabile vecchio pontefice e fu amante e commosso dalla benedizione che ricevette dalla mano di Pio.
