Il ruolo di Davide nella Rivoluzione francese e il servizio a Napoleone costrinse l'artista ad andare in esilio a Bruxelles dopo la sconfitta dell'imperatore a Waterloo nel 1815. Questo ritratto, uno dei primi che dipinse dell'émigré della città, aristocrazia imperiale, rappresenta il generale Gérard, un comandante altamente decorato dell'esercito francese durante i regimi rivoluzionario e napoleonico. David sembra non fare alcuna concessione al clima politico cambiato in questo ritratto, che è tra i suoi più risplendenti e comandanti, registrando Gérard con una tavolozza sorprendentemente vibrante e realismo acuto.
