Constance Macdonald Gilchrist (1865-1946), famosa come "la Gaiety Girl originale", ebbe una carriera di successo nella scena londinese in commedia leggera e vaudeville. Whistler la pose nel suo studio come apparì sul palco del Gaiety Theatre nel ballo di skipping-rope.
