Artiste autodidacte, Bard consacre sa carrière à la peinture de «portraits» des bateaux à vapeur et des voiliers qui traversent la rivière Hudson et les eaux entourant Manhattan. Il a souvent reçu des commandes de constructeurs et d'exploitants de bateaux. Ce double portrait rare représente sa plus belle œuvre connue, avec le bateau à vapeur Thomas Hunt et le yacht America, celui-ci étant retourné à New York d'Angleterre après sa célèbre victoire en août 1851 dans la première course de la Coupe d'Amérique. Bard a capté la compétition entre la voile et la vapeur, célébrant les progrès réalisés dans la conception et l'ingénierie de ces navires.
